The pond of Koseze

Here’s where you can be bored on a sunny day like a true local of Ljubljana.

Koseze pond is a medium sized artificial pond in Ljubljana, which is a nice place to visit in any season. Since Ljubljana and its surrounding area were built on marsh grounds, the pond is now home to marshy animal and plant species, even some endangered ones.

The last time my boyfriend and I visited was a beautiful spring day in 2018, but as true Ljubljana residents we of course got lost walking there and ended up needing more than an hour to reach the pond from the city centre. In reality, it is not that hard to find, as you can follow the markings for the Path of Remembrance and Comradship and you will reach the Koseze pond on the way, but I guess we are talented. You can also take the city bus no. 5 or 22 (bus timetables here).

Impressions of the Koseze pond

In winter days the pond freezes over and becomes an ice rink. In warmer days it is a popular spot for leisure walks and there are some wooden pier platforms, where you can enjoy the sun and maybe have a picnic. It is apparently even possible to buy a fishing permit, as the water is filled with fish and there are always grumpy fishermen around.

There are also always plenty of birds at the pond, such as swans and ducks, which are used to being fed by visitors and are getting quite fat in recent years. On a clear day you can see the mountains around Ljubljana, which are always a beautiful sight. So, if you find yourself with too much time on your hands in Ljubljana and are feeling a bit lazy, the Koseze pond is the spot to chill out and have an ice cream at. 🙂
