First snow in Christmas Ljubljana 2019

It hasn’t snowed in Ljubljana in December in years!

When I returned back home after studying abroad in the cold north of Sweden, our Slovene winter suddenly felt grey and empty, as we haven’t had snow in December in years. We usually get it much later these days, like in January or even April, and when it comes it’s the heavy, wet kind, not the fluffy white blanket I remember from my childhood, but I’ll take what I can get.

Therefore I was beyond happy when it actually started snowing one afternoon in mid-December, even though the snow barely kept for 3 days. You’d think that first snow was nothing to write home about, but my friend and I got a bit overly excited and ended having a whole photography session, which I figured was worth a short blog post. So, here’s a time-lapse video of the main weather event and a bit of wholesome Christmas spirit photos. ‘Tis the season, after all. 🙂

Naturally, we couldn’t avoid the mandatory mulled wine and mulled gin from the Christmas market, which was still mercifully empty that early in the evening. Also, our Christmas decorations are still just as bizarre as they were in 2018, complete with the eye of Sauron and floating sperm. Before you ask, yes, we Slovenians can be quite weird and you can find further proof of that in one of our famous derp selfies below.

We also run across a marching band at Pogačar’s square and they were surprisingly good, or maybe that was all the gin we had? I know for sure that we hadn’t had enough gin to listen to the unfortunate singing duo on the stage next to the Christmas market stalls though.

Since the snow actually kept and it continued to snow the next day as well, I forced my boyfriend to make a snowman with me on our terrace over the weekend, so meet Arnold. He’s chill.

Does it snow in your country? And have your winters also changed as much as ours have due to the whole climate change mess we’ve found ourselves in? Let me know in the comments. 🙂
